Pre-trial California detainees were promised time credit against their future sentence if they worked and completed educational programs.
Many inmates did not receive their time credit.

On June 27, 2016, 4019.4 of the California Penal Code was amended to read:
“(e) This section applies to sentenced and unsentenced inmates confined unsent in a county jail.”
This section granted pre-trial detainees time credit against their future sentences if they completed work and education programs.
Many inmates completed these programs but did not receive their promised time credits.

Under California law, only the sentencing District Attorney and the Secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation can request a resentencing.
